This month brings a lot of change, a lot of transitions. Some expected, some not so much. Anne Lamott’s “Bird by bird” is my mantra du jour. If you haven’t read it, I’d recommend it. It’s great. She’s great. And funny. Anne breaks down the idea of taking on one thing at a time as it applies to writing, but of course there’s a larger life application too.
I’ll admit in a moment of feeling particularly overwhelmed and already blowing the June 1 deadline for this month’s playlist, I thought, well, I’ll just skip this month. I had one job to wrap up, one new job to start and a flight to catch. But then tonight, while visiting a close friend who’s recently been dealt a particularly unfair, shitty hand, we stopped and got coffee. It was one of those perfect places that serves great cappuccinos, but doesn’t get upset if you ask for sugar. Where there’s the old timey charm of steep stairs that would absolutely not be up to modern building codes and the convenience of fast wifi.
Where was I going with this? Oh right–this month’s mix. So we sat, he read, and I thought, well, I guess I could listen to some songs I had flagged in the past couple weeks. And then I remembered, oh yeah, I really like music. But it took the actual act of dedicated listening to remind me. And then, bird by bird, song by song, a playlist started to take shape. And I know those other “birds” will fall into formation too…eventually. But in the meantime, I’ve got a soundtrack to carry me through the rest of the month.
