  1. May 2016 Mix

    May 9, 2016 by Kaitlin

Every so often, I do still listen to new-ish music. It just takes me a little longer to put together a playlist these days. I did put one throwback on there, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of  The Wallflowers “Bringing Down the Horse” album. Strangely, I can barely remember what happened last week, but I can recall with decent clarity listening to that CD over and over on a little boom box when I was 10.

  2. December 2015 Mix

    December 1, 2015 by Kaitlin

I accidentally took a 3 month break on making new mixes. I don’t know what happened, but I think it was a combination of factors–not the least of which is that I find myself less excited about seeking out new music as I get older. Or it somehow feels like more of a chore. I don’t know if my recent desire to solely listen to music from 2008 is  a manifestation of my desire to go back to that time or simple laziness. Probably both.

But then when I do sit down and commit to it, I always end up enjoying the process and the result. So enjoy December’s playlist, and I’ll be back in a month. Or maybe two.

  5. July 2015 Mix

Coming to you live from the Boston airport. I’ve just wrapped up a couple perfect days with family (or as close to perfect days as you can get with family) in upstate NY. Wildlife spotted includes deer, chipmunks, loons, river otters and Pivo the dog, who looks not unlike an otter himself when he swims.

If you’re ever in the area and want some of this amazingly layered ice cream, stop by Donnelly’s in Saranac Lake. They offer one flavor a day (can be twisted with vanilla, as seen here), so the selection process is very easy. No paradox of choice here.

Next up, Portland with long-time friend and spiritual soul mate Sami. We just figured out that our friendship is entering its tenth year this month. There were gay bars involved then, there will be gay bars involved now.

I also turn 30 this month and have now been at my current job more than a year, both of which are things I find hard to believe and produce a certain level of anxiety, but overall I feel pretty great about. Add in some good tunes and a week away from the office? Even better.

  7. May 2015 Mix

May has been the best month of the year. My best friend Amy is married to the best guy who arranged a surprise trip to Cleveland where I finally got to meet the radiant Maddie Claire. She’s just figured out that different humans have different faces and really likes her mom’s. Mine? Not so much, but we’ll get there one day.

Brunch with my oldest friend and my newest friend (she just doesn’t know it yet). #maddieclaire

Old friends are the rarest of blessings. And the fact that I get to see Amy & Co. again before the month is up makes me happier than I’ve been in a long time. In the meantime, these are some of the songs I’m listening to.

  8. April 2015 Mix

I don’t know why I ever settled on 20 songs a month. Sometimes I think about cutting it down to 10, but I think I like 20 because it forces me to sit down and spend time seeking out new stuff. A lot of times I get to about 17 or 18 songs and then kinda hit a wall. In those cases, I’d typically either find something old and add it to the mix, or I’d send Ben a g-chat and say, “Quick, I need a song recommendation now. Go!”

And he’d always come through for me. Lykke Li, Avan Lava, Glass Animals, Florence + The Machine…and many, many more. He always had a tune or two ready to perfectly round out a mix.

This month, I found no shortage of good stuff, lots of it newish, but there was this pang of sadness in not being able to reach out to Ben or to share it with him. But, listening to these songs is also the happiest I’ve been all week, and I think Ben would be on board with that.
